The three largest sport scandals in 2009
As we enter into a new year and look back to 2009, we find a lot of blow-ups that shocked the world of sports. I’ve chosen the three largest ones. Since I don’t want to deal with other people’s personal life, tennis class Singapore I only chose cases that had effects on sport results.
1. The Renault scandal
The biggest scandal in the Formula 1 history began in the middle of summer. The previously sacked driver Nelsinho Piquet admitted that in order to get a new contract from the Renault Team, he crashed his car in 2008 in Singapore. That total helped his teammate, Fernando Alonso to win the GP in Singapore. At first the Renault Team boss Flavio Briatore denied the allegations and threatened Piquet with legal action, but eventually confessed in a press release that Piquet was right. Briatore was banned from any position in the F1 world, but Renault managed to get by. The team announced in December that they will take part in the next year’s F1 Championship too.
2. Henry and the hand of God
Thierry Henry angered a whole country with one pass. This act cost the World Cup for Ireland, though. In the World Cup qualifying playoff second round football match Henry touched the ball with a hand before the crucial goal of France. This way, France managed to clinch a place in the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa. The Irish team was shocked at the incident, and demanded a replay of the match. The FIFA refused their claim, and ruled out the introduction of replay to football. Henry apologized after the affair, smoke-island and Michael Platini, the president of the UEFA defended his fellow French citizen. In the end Henry was not punished by any football association.
3. Agassi’s scandalous book
Andre Agassi, the former world class tennis player confessed in his latest biography, that he took drug on one occasion in 1997. After this night he produced positive a drug test, but he managed to talk out of the suspicion. He was not banned and could carry on his tennis career. The three times Grand Slam winner star apologized for his blunder, but the tennis world was scandalized by Agassi’s confession. Some people demanded that Agassi should be deprived all of his titles, since he broke the strict rules.
